Designed for educators and childcare professionals, you’ll learn to respond to infants and children—including CPR, asthma and anaphylaxis—in line with national guidelines. Delivered via blended learning (online + one day practical), it’s your pathway to confidence and compliance in any accredited education & care environment.

Overview
HLTAID012 Provide an emergency first aid response in an education and care setting describes the skills and knowledge required to provide a first aid response to infants and children in line with first aid guidelines determined by the Australian Resuscitation Council (ARC) and other Australian national peak clinical bodies.
This unit applies to a range of workers within an education and care setting who are required to respond to a first aid emergency, including asthma and anaphylactic emergencies. This includes early childhood workers and educators who work with school age children in and outside of school hours care such as vacation programs etc.
This course is commonly associated and suited for childcare settings as it deals with the most common emergency situations that arise in that environment. It combines both a First Aid and CPR skills competency units.
Please note it is a requirement of this course that you are physically capable of performing uninterrupted CPR for at least 2 minutes on a CPR mannequin placed on the floor.
Award Issued
Students who successfully complete this nationally recognised training will be awarded a certification for the HLTAID012 Provide an emergency first aid response in an education and care setting.
The unit of competency includes the competency requirements of HLTAID009 Provide Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation and HLTAID011 Provide First Aid.
Learning Outcome
Upon completion, learners will be able to demonstrate the necessary skills and knowledge to provide first aid response to a casualty experiencing anaphylaxis, in accordance with the Australian Resuscitation Council (ARC) guidelines.
The course does have a focus area on younger children, making it an ideal choice for early childhood educators or carers. You will also gain an understanding of the causes and signs of anaphylaxis, how to administer adrenaline autoinjectors, and how to effectively monitor and manage a person experiencing an anaphylactic reaction until medical assistance arrives.

Delivery Mode
HLTAID012 Provide an emergency first aid response in an education and care setting is delivered in a blended learning model including:
- Self-paced learning and online assessment (about 10 hours)
- 1-day practical classroom training and assessment

Assessments
Students will be assessed through an online quiz, demonstration of practical skills, participation of role plays and analysis of case studies.
Please note it is a requirement of this course that you are physically capable of performing uninterrupted CPR for at least 2 minutes on a CPR manikin placed on the floor.

Pathways to Further Studies
A Statement of Attainment of HLTAID012 - Provide First Aid in an education and care setting will be issued following successful completion of this course and can be used to seek credit transfer towards achieving an Australian Qualifications Framework (AQF) qualification.
