Entry Requirements

Overview

This page provides the general entry requirements to study at Charter Australia. Some courses have specific course requirements, which can be found at the bottom of the individual course page.

Note: If you do not meet the admission requirements for your particular course at Charter Australia, there may be other ways to secure a place. Please contact us to enquire.  

Academic Entry Requirements

  • a minimum of Year 10 level of literacy and numeracy skills, or 
  • A lower-level VET course 

Students may be required to sit the Language, Literacy and Numeracy test.

If you do not meet the academic entry requirements for your course, you may be able to gain entry to the course via an articulated program. For example, you may be eligible to apply to the Diploma course as a stepping stone to an Advanced Diploma course. See the relevant course pages details page for more information.​ 

Age Requirements

  • Applicants must be 18 years of age or above for courses that require work placement. 
  • 15 years of age or above for English language course(s).

Work placement requirements

Most courses that Charter Australia offers require a mandatory work placement component. Students are required to have:

  • up-to-date immunizations including Covid-19 vaccination, and 
  • a valid police check.

Computer requirements

Students are required to use computer to access study materials, do research, prepare assessments, make notes and communicate with trainers, support staff and/or other students. Students are also required to bring a laptop or tablet computer while attending classes.

English Language Requirements

If you do not meet the English language requirements for your course, you may be able to undertake a recognised English course to fulfil those requirements.

Note: The benchmark for ‘vocational English’ has been aligned to current student visa requirements.


Language Test Exemptions

Applicants may be determined as having vocational English if they meet certain criteria without having to undertake an English test. These may include:

  • Completion of Year 12 or equivalent in Australia or another English-language education system.
  • Completion of qualification in Australia at Certificate III level or higher.

This is a guide only. Different student categories and visa types have different requirements.


Student Categories and English Requirements

1. Domestic Student

Domestic applicants are tested with Charter Australia’s internal LLN test. Exemptions may apply.

Vocational English Eligible for vocational courses (any level).
Intermediate English Eligible for vocational courses (Certificate III only); LLN support offered.
Developing English May not be eligible for vocational courses; determined on a case-by-case basis.
 
2. International Student (Student Visa)

International students apply through the Department of Home Affairs using external tests no more than 2 years old. Exemptions may apply. Refer to the Department of Home Affairs for information: Student Eligibility.

Vocational English Eligible for vocational courses (any level).
Intermediate English Eligible for vocational courses after English study (refer to visa requirements).
Developing English Not eligible for vocational courses. Eligible for English study only.
 
3. Study-Work Program (Working Holiday Visa)

Study-Work Program applicants can use either external test results (within 2 years) or they can be tested using Charter Australia’s internal placement test (this can be done online while outside of Australia). Exemptions may apply.

Vocational English Eligible for vocational courses (any level).
Intermediate English Eligible for vocational courses after English study (refer to visa requirements).
Developing English Not eligible for vocational courses. Eligible for English study only.

 

4. ELICOS Students (Any Visa)

Applicants who only want to study English and not a vocational course will be placed into an English course that matches their needs. Applicants can use either external tests or they can be tested using Charter Australia’s internal placement test (this can be done online while outside of Australia).
