Overview

This short course is ideal for community services and health workers with authority in their state or territory to assist with the administration of medication. The skills in this unit must be applied in accordance with Commonwealth and State/Territory legislation, Australian/New Zealand standards and industry codes of practice.

This course forms part of the elective units of the CHC43015 Certificate IV in Ageing Support and Charter Australia is now offering it as a standalone course for qualified healthcare professionals and graduates in this sector.

The HLTHPS006 Assist Clients with Medication course provides students with the knowledge required to prepare for and provide medication assistance, and complete medication documentation. It also involves supporting a client to self-administer medication.

No prior experience is needed and is ideal for graduates entering the industry or students completing their course training. Students will, however, need to complete our LLN test.

The HLTHPS006 is available for self-paced online study through Charter Australia, however students must attend 1 face-to- face in class workshop at our campus in North Sydney, NSW and a work placement assessment.

Nationally recognised Statement of Attainment for HLTHPS006 Administer and monitor medications.

Learning Outcome

Students will be able to learn how to:

  • Provide medication assistance
  • Complete medication documentation
  • Supporting a patient to self-administer medication
  • Physically assisting and prompting clients with medications (like Webster-paks, eye drops, and creams)
  • NOTE: Patients therefore must have the capacity to self-administer medication.

Entry Requirements

There are no prerequisites or corequisites that are applicable to the units of competency selected within this course.  For Charter Australia’s minimum entry requirements, please visit Entry Requirements page.

Delivery Mode

Mixed with self-paced study, face-to-face classes and work placement assessments.

  • Self-paced study includes reading, research and complete Lesson and assessment tasks that total to 49 hours and includes a 1 hour exam. 
  • 3 x 5-hour classes plus workplace assessment. 
  • Practical assessment is conducted in a residential aged care facility (minimum 1 day for each student or as required until their practical skills are fully assessed.)
  • Statement of Attainment is issued once all assessments are completed successfully.
  • Maximum enrolment period is 8 weeks.

Pathways to Further Studies

HLTHPS007 Administer and monitor medications is a common elective unit for Certificate IV and Diploma level qualifications within health and community services training packages. The unit of competency can be used to seek credit transfer towards these qualifications.
