What does it mean to host a Traineeship?
Traineeships offer hands-on experience with an employer and training with a Registered Training Organisation (RTO) such as Charter Australia.
People learn new practical skills while working, that are aligned to:
- a nationally recognised qualification for work in a specific job role and industry
- a Certificate of Proficiency.
Traineeships around 1-3 years.
They can be part-time, full-time, or school-based.
They’re regulated by the government and established under a Training Contract with Training Services NSW.
Training Services NSW regulates apprenticeships and traineeships in NSW. It also provides support and services to apprentices/trainees and employers.

Your responsibilities hosting a Traineeship
Your responsibilities will include:
- Understanding and providing trainees with the correct wages and conditions to carry out the traineeship.
- Supervising, supporting and mentoring your apprentice or trainee.
- Letting them take time off work with pay for formal training and assessment.
- Completing a Training Contract with an Apprentice Connect Australia Provider.

Requirements on finding good candidates to do a traineeship in NSW
Anyone can make a good trainee with the minimum age being 16 years. This will include high school students or anyone aspiring to gain relevant experience in the industry of their choice or interest.
Charter Australia is an Apprentice Connect Australia Provider (ACAP) and we can assist you with helping you find what type of traineeship needed for your specific business needs.

What we consider when hiring a candidate for a traineeship.
- We consider their motivations and long term goals in their chosen industry.
- We do a background check and interview to assess if they meet the requirements.
- We make sure they have realistic expectations and that it aligns with that of the business.
- We also assess their visa status as traineeships are only reserved for Australian or New Zealand Permanent Residents and Citizens.
- Trainees MUST reside in NSW.
Training Plan and Contract
These are essential for apprenticeships and traineeships.
Training Contract
Apprentice Connect Australia Provider will work with you with a Training Contract. It includes:
- Your details and the details of your apprentice or trainee.
- The term of the Training Contract.
- The vocation, qualification title and qualification level.
Training Plan
Charter Australia will contact you and your trainee to complete a Training Plan. It will include:
- the vocation, qualification title and qualification level
- the time frame for each unit of competency to be completed for the qualification
- the mode of training delivery.

Registering your Traineeship
Charter Australia will submit the Training Contract to Training Services for approval.
Once the traineeship is approved, Training Services will send you a letter.
The training contract is binding from either:
- the approval date indicated
- OR the end of the probationary period, whichever is later.
An initial probation period applies to traineeships (up to 2 months) depending on the contracts terms and conditions.
After the probation period, you and the trainee are fulfilled to complete the contractual obligation period.

For an apprenticeship or traineeship to be legal in NSW, the employer and apprentice/trainee must sign a Training Contract and get it approved. Here’s how it works.

FAQ about our Traineeship Program
Traineeship funding: Smart and Skilled
The NSW Government is paying the course cost for 70,000 new traineeships – meaning trainees undertaking a government funded traineeship course no longer face a student fee of up to $1000.
Traineeship qualifications for new entrants in aged care are now 100% subsidised by the NSW Government under the Smart and Skilled program (please note, training for existing-worker trainees is not subsidised).
To be eligible for approval as a new entrant trainee, you’ll need to have been employed by your traineeship employer for:

less than 3 months as a full-time, full-time equivalent part-time/casual, or a combination of these prior to the commencement of the traineeship;
-
less than 12 months as a part-time or part-time equivalent casual employee prior to the commencement of the traineeship;
-
less than 12 months in a combination of part-time, casual and full-time (or equivalent) employment prior to the commencement of the traineeship.
What’s involved in a traineeship?
A traineeship allows you to learn skills while you earn a wage, making it a fantastic way to gain employment and experience in your chosen sector before you’ve completed your nationally recognised qualification.
Traineeships include the following:
- Employment in a paid position
- An agreement between yourself, an Apprenticeship Network Provider and a registered training organisation like Charter Australia
- Professional and structured on-the-job training
- A training program provided by a registered training organisation like Charter Australia
- A nationally recognised qualification at the completion of your traineeship
Eligible for a traineeship?
Traineeships are available to anyone of legal working age. You do not need to hold a Higher School Certificate (HSC) or other qualification.
Businesses wanting to host trainees must be based in New South Wales.
Trainees may be:
- currently completing a qualification as part of their schooling
- a school-leaver
- an adult worker who is re-entering the workforce
